The aspen furniture pictured on this site is made by myself, Tedd Mathis. I grew up in Wyoming and spent 11 years in the newspaper business. For the past 10 years I've been a pastor in Wyoming and Colorado. Currently I am pastor of Grace Bible Church in Westcliffe, CO, and supplement my income by building rustic furniture. My wife, Dawn, is in emergency medical services, and we have three good-looking, above-average teenagers who provide us with lots of laughs, empty kitchen cupboards and a few gray hairs.
I have really come to enjoy building tables, log beds and other pieces of rustic furniture. Aspen is my first choice for wood, however, on occasion beetle-kill pine and other varieties of wood find their way into my creations. All aspen and pine logs used are harvested from dead fall on private property.
I strive for three things
- Solidly built products with tight-fitting joinery
- A "baby-bottom smooth" finish that people love to touch
- Unique-looking yet useful aspen furniture.
To achieve these goals I prefer talking with customers and when possible, visiting in their homes, thus helping me to select wood and designs appropriate to my customer's homes and decor.
The way I build furniture requires many hours of fitting pieces together and sanding (lots of sanding!). My typical finish involves a sealer, multiple coats of polyurethane plus a final coat of beeswax that leaves a soft, deep sheen.
If you have any questions please contact me. I'm always looking for ideas and better ways of doing things.
